Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) 5-11 February 2024

In celebration of National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) 2024, we would like to introduce one of our HGV Technician apprentices, Tyler Langwith.

Engines run in the family!

Tyler joined CTS Hire, in August 2023 to embark on an HGV Technician Apprenticeship at our depot in Brackley, Midlands. His father, uncle and brother are all mechanics, so a passion for engines runs in the family.

Tyler: “I have always been interested in repairing things.  My Dad and Uncle were always tinkering with cars so I’ve been around vehicles for as long as I can remember.”

Why did you choose the apprenticeship route?

Tyler: “I prefer to be learning whilst I’m actually doing the job and the apprenticeship route offers me the opportunity to combine studies at college with practical experience.”

At CTS, Tyler has been given the opportunity to train on specialist vehicles including all makes and models of refuse and recycling vehicles ranging from 7.5t to 26t, plus caged tippers, hook loaders, ROROs, tractor units and skip vehicles.

Tyler is on block release and spends two weeks at a time at college in Bristol. There’s a lot of coordination with CTS Hire, and Tyler keeps a record of the jobs he does as evidence to support the work he’s doing the classroom.

“I really enjoy the working environment at CTS. They’re a friendly team and they give me lots of opportunities to learn new skills and improve.

“I’m not just assessed on the work I carry out but also my ability to spot and solve problems. It’s about demonstrating that I understand how everything works, not just if I can fix something.”

Tyler’s mentor at CTS Hire is Kevin Franklin, Workshop Technician, who is responsible for guiding and supporting him on a daily basis.

Kevin: “Tyler is doing great. He is easy to work with and asks questions if he’s not sure on something. He listens well to instructions, doesn’t rush, and has a very good work ethic.  We are all very impressed with his progress.”

Tyler finishes his apprenticeship in the summer of 2026. What next?

“I’d like to continue working at CTS, developing my knowledge and skills, and perhaps do my HGV licence. Way into the future I’d maybe like to run my own garage with my brother.”

Outside of work and college Tyler is a big football fan (he played at Academy level whilst at school) and a Manchester United supporter.  He is currently learning to drive, and his dream car is a Porsche GT3RS.

Good luck for the future Tyler!
